A traditional Athenian house
Tripodon 32
The house was built in the early 19th century for Hadji Khalil Efendi, the kadi (judge) of Athens. He was among the earliest Muslim victims of the Greek War of Independence. The Sultan ordered his execution because he refused to agree to the massacre of three thousand Athenians. When Athens became the capital of the Kingdom of Greece, the residence was sold to various owners. The ground floor housed the dining rooms, the bedrooms for the girls, and the servants’ room. The kitchen, the toilet, the oven, and the cellar were in separate buildings around the courtyard. The top floor with the oriel windows was reserved for the master bedroom, the boys’ bedrooms, and the guesthouse. The exterior staircase connected the two floors. Like most buildings in this part of Athens, the residence sits atop ancient ruins visible in front of the house.
