Telling time and the signs
Torre dell'Orologio
The Torre dell’Orologio is located on the northern side of Piazza San Marco, connecting it to the market area of the Rialto. The city's iconic clock tower dates back to the 15th century, with its characteristically blue enamel clock marking not only the time and day but also the phases of the moon and the zodiac cycle. It also has a clever little carillon installed, which is traditionally activated only during celebrations for the Epiphany and the Ascension, since the statues of the carillon show a Nativity scene, with the Three Kings coming to visit newborn Jesus. The statues come out of the panel marking the hours, move along on small tracks and then re-enter the clock from the panel marking the minutes.
