Les enfants terribles
Els Quatre Gats
By the end of the 19th century, Barcelona had witnessed the advent of modernity… The industrial revolution was all too real and Paris, the Mecca of the avant-garde, was just a short trip by train. Thus, the city quickly evolved into a hub for artists and intellectuals. One of the favourite spots of these bohemians was the Cafe Els Quatre Gats. “The Four Cats” were housed in a stunning 1896 Neo-Gothic building by Puig I Cadafalch. There is no shortage of glorious moments when it comes to the history of this beautiful cafe. Pablo Picasso’s first exhibition was held here in 1900 and celebrities like Gaudí and Juan Miro were among the cafe’s most frequent customers. In fact, its 1970´s restoration was made possible after a donation made by Miró. The famous 20th-century painter used to frequent the café as a child to eat chocolate and it seems that it must have earned a special place in his heart! As a tribute to this legendary past, Woody Allen used the cafe as a setting for some scenes of his 2007 film Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona.
