People-watching in La Rambla
La Rambla
Time to explore La Rambla, the famous street that begins from Catalonia Square. Did you know that this was a riverbed? It owes its name to the Arabs, the word Rambla deriving from the Arabic term for the path that a water torrent follows. This was the southern limit of the city during the Middle Ages, an area that was used as a dump for the remains of meat sold outside the city walls. Due to the expansion of the city in the 15th century, the riverbed had to be diverted and, thus, the area became a walking path and later on, in the 19th century, it evolved into a long boulevard torn between the two important districts of Barcelona, Gothic and Raval. The most essential feature of Rambla is the flowers sold by tons of street vendors who started appearing here in the 19th century. A favourite place offering inspiration to the international bohemia visiting the city, a travel attraction, the most famous street of the city, La Rambla is the place to chill on a bench and watch the world go by… Welcome!
