The discreet charm of the bourgeoisie.
Casa Batlló
At number 43 of Passeig de Gràcia, we find Casa Batlló. It was built here among the lavish houses of the local bourgeoisie, who selected this spacious and modern boulevard for their residence. For this reason, the area is also called Quadrat d'Or, meaning Gold Square! So, who was the owner of this stunning mansion? At the turn of the century, Barcelona was at the forefront of the industrial era. The leading sector was the textile industry and Josep Batlló was one of the most powerful textile businessmen of his time. He commissioned the construction of his house to Antoni Gaudi and, since money was not an issue for him and creativity was Gaudi’s second nature, the result was impressive! The cast in iron lamppost benches on the street is also phenomenal! They were designed by Pere Falqués I Urpí, a follower of Gaudi, in 1906. Before leaving, take a look at the floor with the hexagonal-based paving by Gaudi. Can you see the depictions of algae, starfish and ammonites? The marine motifs are engaged in a beautiful dialogue with the aquatic element of the Batlló facade!
