Gaudi’s magnum opus
Sagrada Família
Few buildings in the world could rival the sheer grandeur and spirituality of the stunning Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Family. It surely looks like a Cathedral due to its gargantuan size, but it was founded as a basilica by the 19th-century Catalan bourgeoisie. Led by Francisco de Paula del Villar, works started in 1882 following the Neo-Gothic style, which was in vogue at the time. But one year later, after building the crypt, the architect resigned and Gaudi took over becoming personally involved in what would be his magnum opus, a project he would incessantly work on until his death. With regard to the floor plan, Gaudi followed the typical Latin cross layout of Gothic basilicas without straying from the conventional architectural lines. But the rest is entirely original! A stunning, essentially “gaudinian”, masterpiece. The building soars to the sky in an extremely organic form, in which architecture seems to disintegrate into elements of nature. An almost visionary object that, quite understandably, has haunted the imagination of Surrealists.
