A dividing line
Checkpoint Charlie
Checkpoint Charlie, named using the NATO codes for the alphabet, is the third in a line of crossings after Checkpoint Alpha and Checkpoint Bravo. A symbol of the Cold War era, as well as of the time Berlin lived as a city divided by a Wall, it served as a single-person crossing-point from West Berlin into East Berlin and vice versa, either by foot or by car, for foreigners and members of the Allied Forces. Its popularity was almost immediate, with President Kennedy standing at Checkpoint Charlie to look into East Berlin during his 1963 visit, for example, as well as being featured in newsreels of the time just as much as it’s featured in movies today.
