In contrast to the police quarters that were built according to the British colonial style, one can easily recognize the former prison buildings from their red brick facades. On Old Bailey Street, Victoria Prison is a site popular with visitors who wish to get an idea of what the life of inmates must have been like in the oldest prison in Hong Kong before it was decommissioned in 2006. It also served as a transit and repatriation centre for Vietnamese people in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. It was declared a monument in 1995, and now forms one of the three declared monuments that have been preserved at Tai Kwun. Here, parts of the prison remain open to visitors who can enter the cramped cells while various interactive exhibits are also on display.
