Walking Through the Shadows
Man Mo Temple
Man Mo Temple is a declared monument and the spiritual heart of the city. Its standout features are the jade green roof tiles and the intricately carved roof beams that feature creatures from Chinese mythology. Built around 1847, this temple is famous for its huge coils of burning incense hanging from the ceiling. Stepping through the gates into the shadowy world filled with smoke makes you feel like you have stepped through a portal back in time. No one knows exactly when the temple was built and who was its architect, though an inscription on a bronze bell gives us a clue indicating that the project must have been carried out in “the 27th Year of Emperor Tao-Kuang, Ching dynasty”. Currently, the temple is managed by the largest, and oldest charitable organization in Hong Kong, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. Thus, all money from the temple is raised for charitable works or the maintenance of the structure.
