Too Much Traffic
Central–Mid-Levels escalator
A metropolis like Hong Kong naturally boasts many world records. Among them, we find the Central–Mid-Levels escalator, the longest outdoor escalator construction. It was inaugurated in 1993, providing a much-needed release to the traffic congestion on Hong Kong Island. Connecting the districts of Central and the Mid-Levels, covering a distance of 800 metres and reaching an elevation of 135 metres, this walkway allows pedestrian traffic to flow smoothly above the narrow switchback roads of Hong Kong Island where sidewalk space is so scarce. The total cost of the project was impressively high; 30 million USD dollars were needed for its completion, but it was worth it as today more than 78,000 passengers use the escalators daily, relieving city traffic and congestion in the public transit system in one of the most densely populated cities on Earth!
