Bronze chisel
Bronze chisel
The use of metals – mainly copper – by humans brought great changes to their life. Tools and weapons made of copper were more effective and durable. This era is called the Bronze Age and during this period, the Cycladic people prospered as commerce was thriving. The ancient people of Cyclades were familiar with the use of copper as early as the 6th millennium BC. How do we know? Pieces of dies have been found at various settlements, used to craft weapons as well as funnel-shaped hoppers that were used to melt the metals. Most metal objects that have been found are bronze, including short swords, double-edged swords, chisels, tweezers, needles, etc. However, there are a few finds of silver or lead, such as jewellery and small utensils, figurines and other small objects. This particular bronze chisel is 9 cm long and 2 cm wide in the middle, 2.5 cm wide at one end and 1 cm at the other, the narrowest one. It was a tool used in stone masonry and carpentry, but it also served as a cutting tool.
