Marble hunter figurine
Marble hunter figurine
Most figurines are female and have folded arms. However, male figurines have also been found that do not just stand, but sit on a stool, play a musical instrument, carry a hunting or warrior’s weapon, or hold a cup in their hand. These figurines give us valuable information about everyday life in the Cyclades almost five millennia ago.
This figurine depicts a hunter and is 25 cm tall. His eyes and mouth are carved, while his nose, ears, fingers and toes are shown in relief. His hair forms a braid at the back and bottom of the head. His right hand is folded, while his left elbow is bent upwards. He wears a belt across the chest for weapons (a baldric), which is rendered in relief. In the middle, above the right hand, a small, indistinguishable, triangular dagger is engraved. His chest and genitals have also been rendered in relief. Above the forehead is a kind of headdress, like a hat.
