Moving Forward - Branching Out
Secession Hall
By the end of the 19th century, Europe had experienced tremendous changes which completely modified the political, financial, and social status quo of each country. Art escaped from the academic normes and followed the demands of the time or made a new step forward stirring the waters of creativity. Art Nouveau was born in Belgium as a reaction to traditional artistic styles and as an attempt of the artists to search for freedom and reform through art. Inspired by nature and botanical studies, Art Nouveau’s principles were applied in interior design, graphic arts, and jewellery, among others, making use of modern material, such as iron, glass, and ceramics. The German counterpart of Art Nouveau was the so-called Jugendstil, meaning Youth Style, which gradually in Vienna evolved into a uniquely local idiom, the Secession.
