The Gates of Violence
Albertinaplatz
The memorial against war and fascism is a 1988 work by the sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka. It is divided into four parts. The most prominent is a split white monument, the so-called Gates of Violence, which commemorates the victims of war. It alludes to the gates of a concentration camp. Strong and uncanny memories are evoked all around, as one explores the statues that depict wartime images; clubs, gas masks, dying victims, slaves in chains, cruelty and violence are evident everywhere. The bronze sculpture of a kneeling, street-washing Jew is one of the most striking images, recalling the days when, immediately upon the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany, Jews were forced to clear the streets of anti-Nazi slogans in friction.
