The Most Famous Tenant of the Burggarten
Mozart Monument
The Mozart Monument is dedicated to the most venerable Austrian composer of all times, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is a 7.5-meter-high statue, created with Laas marble from South Tyrol by the architect Karl König and the sculptor Viktor Tilgner in 1896. It features Mozart with a music stand, whereas below him we can see a group of angel-like putti, highlighting the power of Mozart's music. On the front side of the lower part of the monument, we can admire a relief depicting two scenes of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, while the rear side represents a six-year-old Mozart playing music with his father and sister. The monument, which was originally adorning Albertinaplatz, was damaged during the bombing of Vienna by the allied forces in 1945 and 8 years later it was restored and transferred to the beautiful Burggarten.
