Maria Theresia Denkmal
Maria-Theresien-Platz
Maria Theresa’s memorial is classified as a World Cultural Heritage monument, a grand piece commemorating the reign of Maria Theresa for forty years, from 1740 to 1780. The empress is still regarded until today as a great reformer and a Habsburger archetype of motherhood. Her huge memorial was constructed by Kaspar von Zumbusch within a course of 13 years and was revealed as part of a grand ceremony that took place in 1888. It depicts the empress greeting the people and holding a document roll of the Pragmatische Sanktion and a sceptre. She is surrounded by her generals and other celebrated Austrian personalities, including Haydn and Mozart. The two composers, who were friends and shared mutual respect, stand close to each other, with Haydn’s hand resting on the shoulder of young Mozart.
