Requiem in D Minor
Michaelerplatz
The square owes its name to the Michaelerkirche, a Gothic church, which dates back to the early 13th century. One of the most famous attractions of the church is the burial crypt, which was created in the 16th century, initially as a final resting place for the nobility and later for the middle classes too. Yet, the most fascinating detail about this stunning church is actually quite musical… You see, this was the site where on December 10th, 1791, the requiem for the death of Austria’s musical genius, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was held. It was a sad day for the Viennese, but a grand moment as well, as it saw the premiere of the completed parts of the composer’s divine Requiem in D Minor.
