The Birthplace of Psychoanalysis
Sigmund Freud Museum
The Sigmund Freud Museum invites its guests to take a deep plunge into the depths of Sigmund Freud's life and ideas. Located here, at Berggasse 19, where Freud moved in 1891 and lived for 47 years, it is the place where the “father of psychoanalysis” produced the majority of his oeuvre. The exhibits include personal items of Sigmund Freud, the practice's waiting room, and parts of his vast antique collection. Photos, paintings, drawings, and sculptures are among the most prized items on display, while visitors are given the opportunity to put everything in context through a presentation of the history of psychoanalysis. The museum is next to Europe's largest psychoanalytic research library, which boasts more than 35,000 volumes and the research institute of the Freud Foundation. It was inaugurated in 1971 in the presence of Sigmund Freud’s daughter, Anna Freud, and its expansion is currently in the pipeline.
