The end of a hero
Propylaea
The Frankish Tower or Koulas was the site of martyrdom of Odysseas Androutsos, a national hero of the Greek War of Independence. Androutsos, who became famous for his heroic deeds during the war, was soon involved in the fratricidal civil wars that plagued the revolution. In 1825, the kodjabashis Lambros Nakos and the Phanariot Theodoros Negris falsely accused him of high treason. Androutsos was arrested and imprisoned in the Koulas. He was tortured and, eventually, assassinated on the orders of Yannis Gouras, who had been Androutsos’ second in command.
