St.Paul-St.Louis Church
The first Jesuit church in Paris was constructed between 1627 and 1641 by Jesuit monks, who managed to gain financial support from Louis XIII. The church, the first Baroque church built in Paris, designed by Étienne Martellange and François Derand, was originally dedicated to Saint Louis. During the French Revolution, it was transformed into a temple of Reason, serving at the same time as a book warehouse. After the Concordat of 1801, which was an agreement reached between Napoleon Bonaparte and papal and clerical representatives, the building was once again a place of worship, dedicated also to Saint Paul, in memory of the church Saint-Paul-des-Champs, which had been located in the quarter since 1125, replacing a chapel erected in 632 and dedicated to Saint Paul.
