The Bridges of Paris
Pont Louis-Philippe
Without a doubt, the bridges of Paris are one of its most beautiful features. The development of the city was organized with the gradual construction of a network of 37 bridges and footbridges that efficiently linked the left and the right banks of the city. The first bridges, the so-called Petit Pont (Small bridge) or Petit Pont-Cardinal Lustiger, as it is known today, and the Grand Pont (Big bridge), currently the Pont Notre-Dame, were originally made of wood in the 3rd century BC. In fact, the Petit Pont is the smallest Parisian bridge until today. During the Middle Ages, Paris featured many wooden bridges that collapsed under the weight of several shops, armouries, and houses. The construction of new bridges was initiated in the first decades of the 17th century. Pont Neuf was completed in 1607 and is the oldest bridge in Paris, while the most recent is the Passerelle Simone-de-Beauvoir.
