Royal Concierge Services
La Conciergerie
King Clovis I, who reigned between 481 and 511, decided to build his palace in this location. By the 10th century, the palace had become the centre of all administration, as the government and the royal council were seated within its walls. Over time, it was fortified, expanded and transformed, especially during the reign of Louis IX and Philip the Fair. It was named Conciergerie from the French word concierge, meaning housekeeper, due to the fact that during the king’s absence, the royal housekeeper was responsible for all aspects of life in the palace. Towards the end of the 14th century and while the Hundred Years War was at its peak, Charles V decided to leave this palace in favour of a more protected residence and moved to Château de Vincennes.
