Pointing the way
Guia Lighthouse and Fortress
Standing at Macau’s highest peak is the Guia Lighthouse, Fortress, and Chapel, part of the city’s protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. In order to secure the city, the construction of a fortress began in 1622, which, though incomplete, nonetheless assisted in the city’s defense against the Dutch attack in that same year.. The chapel was added around the same time, but the lighthouse came two centuries later, between 1864 and 1865. It boasts the title of being the oldest Western-style lighthouse anywhere on the Chinese coast, and the light from its tower was visible from 20 miles out at sea, providing excellent guidance for passing ships. No longer in use for this, the lighthouse is part of a complex covering 800 square meters and is very popular with tourists.
