Senado Square
Senado Square is where the heart of Macau has been beating, almost from its very inception. Luckily for pedestrians, the square is car and motor -free , as with increasing tourism it was paved over in order to protect the city’s character and heritage. In keeping with its historical ties, Senado Square was paved over with Portuguese tiles. These tiles are found throughout Portugal and its former colonies, and typically consist of black and white mosaic patterns, usually in geometric patterns. Made from basalt and limestone, the tiles give a sense of uniformity of design wherever they are found. You can spot them in many streets around Macau, with the ones in Senado Square creating a wave pattern.
