The cell in the Church of St. Anargyroi
The church of St. Anargyroi was built in the 11th century. It was used to store ammunition during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829). The church also served as a meeting place (and occasionally as burial grounds) for local military leaders. In 1826 cannons were set up for the defence of the city and the church was damaged by Turkish artillery. Papadiamantis used to worship or sing in this church, along with his cousin, Alexandros Moraitidis.
