Aragon & Castile
Palacio de la Generalitat
The Generalitat –or “generality”- was originally created in 1362 to manage the taxes offered to the Crown of Aragon. These taxes were used in part to fund the war with Castile, because in the late Middle Ages, Spain as we know it today did not yet exist! Along the Iberian Peninsula, there were a number of kingdoms, who inevitably often quarrelled.r. In addition to Portugal and Navarre, the main characters in this Hispanic Game of Thrones were the wealthy Muslim sultanate of Granada; the heavily populated Castile, noted for its powerful rural nobility; and Aragon, known for powerful bourgeois cities such as Barcelona and Valencia that expanded commercially and militarily throughout the Mediterranean, conquering Sicily, southern Italy and, for a time, even Athens! Until the marriage between Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon in 1469, these two kingdoms were at war most of the time.
