A New Market in Town
Mercado Central
The medieval Muslim Bazaar settled in this district outside the city walls, remained active after the Christian conquest, and ended up being a daily market inside the walls after the perimeter expansion by king Peter IV. In the 19th century, a temporary market was set up, but it soon became necessary to build a new market building for a growing bourgeois population that desired a building in line with the European capitals. Thus, Soler March and Guardia Vial, prominent Art Nouveau architects with close links to Barcelona’s Doménech Montaner, designed a colourful building that combines the new industrial cast-iron architecture with traditional elements, where polychrome ceramics play a special role. The Valencian identity is also visible in the colours of the regional flag and the coat of arms of Valencia in the stained glass windows.
