In Byzantine times
In Byzantine times
We are now in the thematic section titled “In Byzantine times”. The main text states that “Christianity took the place of the ancient religion. Important sanctuaries and oracles were shut down or turned into Christian churches.” In other words, the beginning of the Byzantine era marked the end of the Olympic Games and this pause was to last for over 1,000 years.
This section has a distinctive blue color on the walls. Within the niches there are texts, images and symbols of the Byzantine era. All of these together, combined with the dimmed lighting of the space and low music, create a religious, awe-inspiring atmosphere reminiscent of a church.
At the end of the dark room, ample light pours in through the ceiling, giving a sense of optimism for what follows next. The convex wall that marks the end of the passage is covered with a black-and-white photograph from the first archaeological excavation at Olympia in 1875-1881. The massive ruins of Olympia bear witness to the glorious past of this land. The virtually tiny human figures at the side of the photograph serve to bring forth the actual magnitude of ancient Olympia. The excavation of ancient Olympia opened the conversation about reviving the Olympic Games, which we will explore next.
