The revival of the Olympic Games
The revival of the Olympic Games
The revival of the Olympic Games coincided with the efforts to create the modern Greek state, striving to form a national and cultural identity, while at the same time being highly influenced by the western world of the Industrial Revolution. Within this climate the Greek scholar Dimitrios Vikelas made acquaintance with the French philhellene Baron Pierre de Coubertin. As we proceed through the room we reach a scenographic installation with Vikelas’ original desk, on which there is a book and a pair of spectacles. Opposite, there is a black leather armchair and next to it a small round table, while the walls are decorated with portraits of the two men. In front of the scenographic installation, there is a stand displaying the correspondence between Vikelas and Coubertin, with dramatized excerpts from this being audible in the space. The two men met at the International Athletic Congress of Paris in 1894. As mentioned in the relevant text “Coubertin’s dream comes true on the 23rd of June 1894, when the revival of the Olympic Games is decided upon at the Paris Congress. On that same day, the International Olympic Committee is founded and Athens is proposed to become the first city to host the modern Games”. You will find more information on what was said at that conference through the audiovisual material that’s available in the cylindrical room before you exit the section.
