Athens in preparation
Athens in preparation
As we move past the scenographic installation with Vikelas’ desk, on the wall to our left there are several photographs and texts with information on the preparations for the Athens Olympic Games 1896. The city was filled with enthusiasm but also concern, as it did not have the infrastructure to host the Olympic Games. The Organizing Committee turned to the wealthy Greek citizens in Greece as well as prosperous Greek communities of the diaspora for funding. Across the wall, above the texts and the photographs, extends a black-and-white panoramic view of the historical center of Athens, photographed in 1884. On the right side of the photograph towers the imposing ancient rock of the Acropolis and opposite it, in the background, the hill of Lycabettus. Between the two spreads the densely built city of Athens with low houses and tiled rooves. At the center of the photograph the triangular park of Theseion and the Ancient Agora stand out.
