Athens 1896
Athens 1896
After the preparation fever for the revival of the Olympic Games, we are now in the section dedicated to the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. The layout of the room evokes the Panathenaic Stadium. The space is semicircular and is bathed in ample light, while the circumference of the floor is surfaced as a running track. The entire extent of the amphitheatrical main wall is covered by a remarkably vivid photograph of the seating of the Panathenaic Stadium. As a continuation of the photograph there is a block of roomy, semicircular tiered seating, where we can sit. On the wall to the right of the entrance photographs are presented from the athletic facilities of the 1896 Olympic Games. Moving towards the interior, we come across a long showcase below the seating, which contains old photographs and information about the historical evolution and rebuilding of the Panathenaic Stadium. A video is projected on the wall opposite the benches, and we can listen to its description in the following story. At the center of the section there are showcases of glass and metal which contain small figurines of athletes in various sports from the 1896 Games. At the exit there is a 3-D maquette of the Panathenaic Stadium which we can explore through touch and listen to its description.
