The 10 days of the Games
While visiting the section about the 1896 Olympic Games, the first in modern times, we can sit on the seating and listen to a short description of the video. It includes black-and-white photographs and documents from the first Games, which lasted for just ten days, from the 25th of March to the 2nd of April 1896. During this period around 60,000 people came together in Athens to watch the games, among which were the royal family and highly esteemed guests. 241 athletes took part in the games, from 13 countries, competing in 9 sports and 43 events. Discus throwing, fencing, running, the horizontal bar, rings, and swimming were among them. A new event, the Marathon, was introduced for the first time. Spyros Louis took part at the last minute and came first. Another victory for the Greeks was won by Ioannis Mitropoulos who was crowned champion on the rings. However, some unexpected surprises did take place, such as the heavy rainfall, due to which some events were cancelled. During the days of the Games, the Athenians saw their city more splendid and festive than ever before. While the Olympic Games were running, the theatrical play “Antigone” by Sophocles was also presented, in its original Ancient Greek text. During the closing ceremony, King George I crowned all the athletes with an olive branch from ancient Olympia.
