The second large section of the Museum is dedicated to the Olympic Games of Athens 2004. It is the year that the Olympic Games return home! The section begins with a series of showcases including printed material and designs related to the preparation of the Olympic Games. Specifically, the candidature file for undertaking the Olympic bids for 1996 and 2004 are exhibited, as well as the designer drawings and sketches about the various elements of the event’s aesthetic identity, such as medal designs, the flag, the mascot and the torch. A video projection presents the works and facilities that were constructed from the moment of the awarding of the Games, on September 5th, 1997. The architecture of this section evokes the Olympic Stadium of Athens and towering at the center is an impressive scenographic installation with costumes from the Opening Ceremony. On the left, an entire wall is dedicated to the map of the first global torch relay, the tactile representation of which you can touch. In addition, there are showcases with printed material, memorabilia and awards for Greek athletes, as well as screens showing interviews with people who participated in the Games. At the end of the section, across the entirety of the wall, scenes from the Opening and Closing Ceremonies are projected, as well as snapshots from the Games. The section is concluded with the awards given to the Greek Olympic victors.
