Athens 2004: The “Clepsydra”
Athens 2004: The “Clepsydra”
A large hall with vivid colors opens up before us. Standing out at its center is the scenographic installation of the “Clepsydra”. This is a segment from the Opening Ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games focused on the concept of historical retrospective and a journey of costumes through time, with Clepsydra translating as Hourglass in English. The 21 minutes of the phantasmagoric parade of the “Clepsydra” shall forever remain inscribed in collective memory as one of the most enchanting opening ceremonies in the history of the Olympic Games.
On a long, raised passageway a spectacular parade of dream-like figures inspired by frescoes, mosaics, sculptures and icons is presented. The elaborate costumes of the parade depict ten scenes from Greek history, drawing from mythology and antiquity up to the Byzantine Empire and the modern age. They are hand-painted and made of paper, gauze, and plastic.
First is the costume of the Snake Goddess from Minoan Crete, consisting of a long skirt with layers in yellow, red, and orange tones, completed by two snakes suspended at the height of the arms. There follow the costumes of the Mycenaean warriors in the dark green color of oxidized bronze, with their boar’s tusk helmets. The Archaic and Classical periods are presented through the white costumes of the Kouroi, taking a step forward with their left foot, and also the famous Caryatids with their women’s chitons. Vivid colors and rich fabrics characterize the costumes of Hellenistic-era women, called “Tanagra women”, as well as the attire of the Byzantine period. At the end of the corridor, we find the costume of the Red Centaur, one of the most impressive costumes of the Opening Ceremony, which you can explore by touch.
The ceiling is curved and dark blue in color, with small white lights representing the starry summer sky of Attica! Pairs of colorful wings from various costumes are suspended from the ceiling, with the bow and arrow of the god Eros standing out.
