Chronicle of the Games 2006-2036
Chronicle of the Games 2006-2036
Following the sections on the Athens 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games, is the Chronicle of the Games from 2006 until today and beyond.
We are in a long corridor where we are presented with snapshots and memorabilia in chronological order, from the Turin Winter Olympic Games in 2006 up to Beijing 2022. After 2022, there is a series of empty spaces, which will host objects from future events up to the year 2036.
The presentation of the individual events follows the compact structure of the section “Chronicle of the Games 1900-2000”. Here too, the historical information and memorabilia are presented in successive panels that cover the walls of the section. For example, we shall mention some key moments from the PyeongChang Olympics in 2018, where the importance of truce is highlighted. Thanks to a historic agreement, mediated by the International Olympic Committee, North Korean athletes were allowed to cross the Demilitarized Zone in order to compete in South Korea. The athletes from the two Koreas marched together, under the same flag, bringing forth the power of the Olympic spirit. Also, the Tokyo 2020 Games stand out for being the first time in history that the Games were postponed. The Tokyo Olympics took place a year after their initial schedule, without an audience, due to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The section is brought to an end with the phrase by Pierre de Coubertin “The essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well”.
