The Olympic Movement
The Olympic Movement
Citius, Altius, Fortius - Communiter. Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together. The four words of the Olympic motto introduce us to the section dedicated to the Olympic Movement, its values, and the institutions of the Olympic Games.
On the left, we are presented with a series of texts containing information about the Hellenic and the International Olympic Committees, as well as the Olympic Academy. The International Olympic Committee is the supreme authority of the modern Olympic Movement. It was founded in 1894 in Paris with the aim of ensuring that the Games are conducted properly and to advance the Olympic values towards the creation of a better and more peaceful world. Then, the International Olympic Truce Centre is referenced, founded in 1992 with the aim of restoring the institution of the Sacred Truce. This initiative was recognized by the United Nations as a valuable means for the promotion of world peace.
After this there is a glass showcase where the ceremonial attire of the priestess of the 2004 Lighting Ceremony is exhibited. It is a long white chiton, accompanied by a pair of leather sandals, as well as the river stones with which the priestess kept the rhythm of the movement.
The Olympic symbol of the Olympic Games, the iconic white flag with five colored rings is the centerpiece of this section. Exhibited under the Olympic flag is a remarkable collection of Torches from the global cities which have hosted the Olympic Games, each with different designs, dimensions and colors. Three screens project scenes from the lighting ceremonies of the sacred flame and torch relays. Under the Olympic Flag, in a separate showcase, there are two Torches and the Olympic Symbol which you can explore by touch.
