Moors Revolt in Granada!
Gate of the Bridge
In 1492 Granada was conquered and with it the last Muslim kingdom of al-Andalus disappeared, but many Muslims stuck around. The very Catholic King of Spain, Philip II of Habsburg wasn´t very happy with this situation and in 1567 he implemented a number of laws to marginalize them, including banning the Arabic language, and forcing the Moors who lived in the kingdom to wear the typical Castilian dress rather than their own. The following year a Moorish revolt broke out in the mountains of the Alpujarra, near Granada. The leader,Aben Humeya, claimed to be a descendant of the Umayyad of Cordoba! In 1570 King Philip decided to move his court from Madrid to Cordoba, to bring the military council closer to the epicentre. Despite having Ottoman reinforcements sent from North Africa, the military leadership of the king’s half-brother John of Austria, aka the Hero of Lepanto, helped crush the rebellion in 1571.
