The House of Art
Museum Ludwig
In 1976, German art patron and chocolate magnate Peter Ludwig (1925-1996) and his wife Irene Monheim donated 350 modern artworks to the city of Cologne, who in turn founded Museum Ludwig between the Cologne Cathedral and the Hohenzollern bridge. It was conceived as a double-museum at first, which would accommodate both the Museum Ludwig and the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, and was designed by architects Peter Busmann and Godfried Haberer.. Opening its doors in 1986, the double-museum concept didn’t last long due to the ever-growing Ludwig collection. Thus the pair of museums were separated in 1994, with the building nearest the Cathedral incorporating only the Ludwig museum collection.
