100,000 thousand years of history.
The Roman-Germanic Museum
The Roman-Germanic Museum, opened in 1974, is situated in the heart of the city and is an archaeological site in and of itself. It was developed around an urban Roman villa, distinguishable by the world-renowned Dionysius mosaic, and its inner layout resembles the exact design of an ancient Roman villa. The Roman-Germanic museum is home to around 100,000 years of documented human history in the Rhineland, and two collections owned by the city of Cologne: The Roman department, and the Prehistoric department. Honoring Cologne’s founding history, the museum has hosted several special exhibitions on Agrippina the younger, the final founder of the city, with images of her Imperial family, reimagining her eventful life.
