Ferdinand and his girls
Tour Pey-Berland
The Tour Pey-Berland (Pey Berland Tower) was built from 1440 to 1500 to house the massive bells of the nearby cathedral of Saint-André de Bordeaux. However, the expected intense vibrations of the bells could cause structural damage to the cathedral, so the tower stands isolated to protect the church. The campanile (free-standing bell tower) was the brainchild of the Archbishop of Bordeaux Pey Berland. Unfortunately, the authorities could not find any money to cast the bells, so the tower became home to local families until 1790. The bells were installed after 1851. There are three smaller bells (Marie, Clémence, Marguerite) and a tenor bell named Ferdinand that weighs eight tons and is among the largest in France. The building has a height of 66 meters (216.5 feet). The sculptor Alexandre Chertier made the gilded statue of Our Lady of Aquitaine in 1863.
