A bank as beautiful as a palace
The National Bank of Romania
Between 1685 – 1880, on this spot where today we find the National Bank, stood the Serban Voda Inn, the largest in Bucharest. Even though the inn was demolished, its ruins are still visible underneath the street, through the glass tiles. This beautiful palace was completed in 1890 in a 19th century Classical style by two French architects, Albert Galleron and Cassien Bernard. Galleron is famous in Bucharest for designing the superb Romanian Athenaeum concert hall, one of the top landmarks in the city, while Bernard was the second architect in charge of the Garnier Opera in Paris. Taking cues from old Greek architecture, the front is adorned with sculptures that represent the gods from Greek and Roman pantheon: Themis for Justice, Ceres for Agriculture, Mercury for Commerce, and Vulcan for Industry.
