Witness of Bucharest’s development
Bucharest Municipality Museum
One of the oldest surviving buildings in Bucharest, the Suțu Palace was built by Viennese architects in 1835 in the Gothic Revival style as the private residence of one of Wallachia’s wealthiest families. Until the interwar period, the house also had a large garden and menagerie of exotic birds. The palace was a magnet for high society thanks to its beautiful interior: a massive Murano mirror and monumental staircase in the hallway. In the 1890s, this is where the biggest parties happened, with the royals as guests of honor. King Carol greatly favored Grigore Suțu, the owner of the house. As a token of his respect, the king extended two fingers when shaking hands with Suțu, instead of just one as was the custom for His Majesty. Since 1959, it’s been used as the Museum of Bucharest, boasting an exhibition that tells the story of Bucharest starting from the 2000s until the prehistoric period.
