The revolution began
Tahrir Square
If you continue down Talaat Harb Street, you will reach Tahrir (Liberation) Square. This vast public town square was the focal point of the 2011 Egyptian revolution that resulted in the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak. The obelisk of Ramses II at the centre of Tahrir Square was installed in 2020 (previously, it stood in Tanis in the north-eastern Nile Delta). The imposing 14-story building that dominates the square is the famous Mogamma. It was built in 1949 as a centralised administrative building. Although it was designed for 4000 employees, at the peak of its glory, it housed almost 30,000 people (plus thousands of daily visitors) and was the main culprit behind the massive traffic jams that plague Tahrir Square. Since 2019, the Egyptian government has embarked on a project to relocate its agencies elsewhere in Cairo.
