The Franciscan Monastery of St Francis
The katholikon of the Franciscan monastery of St Francis on 28 Chaledon street is an important Venetian monument and the largest of its kind in the city. We do not know exactly when it was built but there are records of it still standing after a devastating earthquake in 1595, which killed three people. During the Ottoman Occupation, it was converted into a mosque and later on, following the enforced deportation of all Muslims from the island, it functioned as a café-chantant, which was essentially a singing café, like a cabaret, but less politicised. Then, it housed a cinema house called Idaion Antron, a popular name for establishments since it makes reference to the Cave of Mt Ida, the highest peak in Crete. Later, the building also functioned as a military storeroom. Its latest use, but not its final, was as the main exhibition space for the massively important collection of neolithic, Minoan and Roman artefacts found in and around Chania.
