Numerous excavations have taken place on the hill of Kastelli and there is a number of active digs currently underway in a few plots in and around Kanevaro and Katre streets that you can peer through from street level. Archaeologists have uncovered the presence of an important Minoan palatial centre on Kastelli, dating to the Late Minoan period (c. 1700-1070 BCE). It is the only one in western Crete, and has also yielded Linear B tablets, normally found in palatial archives, as well as a Linear A archive. Linear A is an older script than Linear B and still undeciphered. Unfortunately, it is near impossible to uncover the full extent of the palace, as the entire hill has been built over by the Venetians. The presence of Minoan remains was only revealed after a German bomb devastated the area in 1941.
