Venetian thalassocracy
The Arsenali
The Republic of Venice was a maritime republic, which primarily controlled trade in faraway places. Its imperial structure was "scattered", according to the French historian Fernard Braudel. It was made up of the Dogado of Venice and the Lagoon, the Stato di Terraferma comprising territories in northern Italy, and the Stato da Màr, which included its overseas possessions. In 1204, the Kingdom of Candia, named after the capital of Crete at the time, Candia or Chandax, i.e. modern Heraklion, was bought by the Venetians for 1,000 silver marks. It took them another almost 50 years to subdue the Cretans.
