The last of their kind
The Moro Shipyard
The Moro shipyards were commissioned in 1607, a time when all the rest had already been fully operational for decades. They were a tad longer than the earlier Arsenali at 60m in length, but basically the same. Of the five originally envisaged shipyards only two were completed by the time the Ottomans took over in 1645. The rest remained roofless; two were buried in rubble to provide support to the seawall, while the middle one was given a new lease of life when it was completely refurbished in 2010. It now houses the non-profit organisation of the Chania Sailing Club. Fittingly, the one next to it, to the right, is home to the annex of the Maritime Museum of Crete, the burgundy building located on the western side of the harbour.
