The cave of Aglauros
Aglaurus was the daughter of Cecrops and Aglaurus, daughter of Actaeus (who was the first king of Attica). During a protracted struggle against an enemy force, the people of Athens learned from an oracle that in order to save their city an Athenian would have to commit suicide. Aglaurus fulfilled the oracle by jumping off the walls of the Acropolis. Her sacrifice immortalised her in the eyes of her compatriots who worshipped her as a Nymph.
