The god of fire
Temple of Hephaestus
Hephaestus was the god of fire, metalworking, forging, crafts, blacksmithing, sculpture and volcanoes (Vulcan in Latin). He was the son of Zeus and Hera. Hera rejected him when he was born because he had a lame leg. She cast him down to earth but the infant fell in the sea and survived. Thetis and Eurinome, two sea deities, took care of the divine baby and raised him to adulthood. Quite soon Hephaestus showed his special talents in every single form of craft and in order to thank these two deities he made them jewellery that was beautiful beyond imagination.
