The Athenian hero
Statue of King Theseus
Theseus is one of the main heroes in Greek mythology. He was especially admired in Athens, where he was worshipped and honoured as the founder of the city. The Athenians took advantage of every opportunity to associate themselves with Theseus and project themselves as the descendants of the great king. The temple of Hephaestus in the ancient Agora has numerous sculptures depicting Theseus and his Labours. This explains the enduring misconception by locals that it was dedicated to him. This belief formed the basis for naming the surrounding neighbourhood "Theseion".
